growth and development
i forgot to mention in earlier entry : we brought Harris to the clinic too yesterday ( in between the two photo shop visits). he was supposed to get his two months old vaccination jab but the nurse refused to do so as he is 3 days younger than 2 months old. what pissed me off was the fact that THEY were the ones who gave the appointment date and said it was ok. nurses... sigh. anyway , let's put that aside.
You Harris, however, was still weighed and measured. 5.3 Kg and 54 cm in length. I am amazed and honoured.me being a paediatrician in the making ( uhuk uhuk) absolutely will chart up your growth even when the nurses didn't ( n i tell you they should!) so here they are :
you started off at a 5th centile ( which means 5 % of babies your age weigh similarly or below) and now at two months old you have catched up to 50th centile! that's ma boy :)
i also, just now, incidentally elicited that you have bilateral ankle clonus sustaining about 3 to 4 beats. made my heart skip a couple of beats before i could think properly again. how could i not be when clonus might indicate a high motor neuron abnormality ( like cerebral palsy for instant)!however, i believe it is normal to have clonus at this age provided it was not too prolonged and no other signs of neurological deficit. Harris, you are growing well in all aspect - gross motor, socially, vision and hearing - therefore this finding is likely to be part of your normal development eventhough not all infants have it.it'd better be so... we'll see in a few months.
you see mothers, this is the reason why clinic follow up is vital - to ensure that babies grow up well and free from any condition that might not be apparent at birth or early neonatal period and thats why you need to plot the chart so that you know that your child is still within the majority wagon.

Harris' first Passport
Harris made his debut passport and pic yesterday! My God he was so sleepy that we had to go to the photo shop twice coz Harris didn't want to wake up the first time despite vigorous attempts to make him so. My dear Harris:D
That was the best snap the photographer managed to take as he was still very sleepy and did not look at the camera most of the time ( i think this was the only time he did so).
Anyway, well done mon petit. you made it:D now set yourself for grand voyage around this little planet :)

The Dilemma
1.Infantile colic and how to solve it
Since birth Harris had never been clad with 'barut' . for the past two days he has. and the difference is remarkable. he is now able to sleep soundly during day time. less crying, n less colic episode ( kembung as my mom called it). thanks to nenek ( maternal great grandma) who made them. now i believe :D
infantile colic is a benign condition though. it's a come and go thing like regurgitation. very common in neonate and usually will disappear by 3 to 4 months old.but having said that, it is still very irritating for babies and to see them in such state is no comfort for us parents either.
2.Regurgitation
Thank God my dear Harris has no major problem so far and i hope it d stay that way forever. I am quite worried about his frequent regurgitation though. at one point i thought it was already a laryngopharyngeal reflux as he experienced hoarseness of voice , and throat clearing episodes. luckily the hoarseness has gone but the throat clearing is still there particularly in the morning. so far he has no problem thriving and feeds well, therefore leading me to believe it is not yet a disease.if any other mother i would have reassured them that it is not serious and will be self-limiting as babies grow older.but as it happens to me now ( even when i am a potential future paediatrician) , i totally understand why mothers can worry so much even on petty things when it comes to their children. kids... you guys are soo lovable.

n one more thing Harris dear, when you re old enough to understand all these, please remember these rewards they all come from Allah n because of that you should learn to give back as a gesture of gratefulness. while you re in great comfort of mommy's n daddy's hand ( and many others)there are thousands of your fellow children who barely have a decent shelter and protector.. think of them and give back, all rite.

The makeover
Salut Harris dear!
Mama has just finished refurnishing this blog . new background and template, adding more links here and there, rearranging the gadgets and stuff. but a little bit regretful as i forgot to printscreen the old theme and layout :(
took me quite sometime though since i was frequently interrupted to feed you, to calm you and reciting zikr till you slept off only to wake up again once your head touched the pillow:p yes Harris mon petit cher , nursing you does drain off considerable energy ;p but I'm just too happy to be doing so, for my child's sake and for mine too( need to get rid off the extra pounds so that Abah won't complain) :D
mama has bought the Aldo car seat and you have pioneered it yesterday in Abah's car. well , it seems like you are needing more time to befriend it. hmm.. but at least you are liking your MacLaren rocker more nowadays;)

after 1 month
Harris is one month old now! and you grow my dear, you have grown significantly. you were born with weight of 2.41 kg , coming down to 2.35kg on day 4 of life ( it's normal to lose up to 10% of birth weight on the first week of life), then picked up to 2.6 kg on day 15 , 3 kg on day 20 and by 1month old ,you are 3.7 kg! you make mama so proud for breastfeeding you honey. :)
mama just bought an electric breast pump online today - spectra 3 model, ( together with cooling bag set). should receive the parcel in 2 days time. can't wait. abah bought me a manual Anakku pump during your first week as i felt significant breast discomfort due to milk engorgement. so it was a relief then to have it pumped out. i have started expressing the milk for storage as well but it was very unsatisfactory with the current pump not to mention aching hand and fingers from pumping.
i'm planning to buy you a stroller and a car seat as well, with priority given to the latter. I'm currently very attracted to get you the Aldo convertible car seat for its much lower price yet very good feedback from users. it is on sale now and the offer will last until next week. i might buy it :D
as for the stroller, well i'd love to get you a Mac laren actually, but i might just settle for a cheaper one like Halford: Cosmo DX Travel System. will ask abah's opinion about it once he got back ( but I doubt he wants any) - i have the feeling that he'll be very discouraging on this and play his usual role as devil's advocate :P Harris, you have to be team mama on this ;-)

The birth of an angel
ENFIN !! Our petit angel is here!!
Our baby was born on August 21st 2010 ( 21 / 08 / 2010 ) at 37 week and 6 days of POA. everything seems to happen timely. mama planned to start taking pre delivery leave on Saturday, and there you were ! showing the sign of getting out from my womb as early as 630 a.m in the morning of Saturday 21st.
I was about to perform my subuh prayer when i felt something dribbling down my legs. initially i thought it was the incontinence which i sometimes experienced when i cough or sneeze ( or any manoeuvre that increases intra abdominal pressure in that matter ). however, this one came unprovoked. I hesitated and sat for a while. it had gone. I then continued with my prayer. halfway performing it, the dribbling became more prominent.. it was more like streaming then. My prayer was halted. There and then I was pretty sure it was not urine. It was something else coming from a different tunnel. My heart skipped a beat or two. ' is it gonna be today?' 'for real?' and i kept asking myself the same thing over and over.
mama told papa of what happened. there were both happy and nervous expression on his face ( so did mine). we already pre planned to travel back to kuantan that morning as papa was supposed to work and my leave began that day. i did not feel any contraction pain nor having show at that moment, therefore we were not rushing and took our sweet time to prepare for the voyage to the hospital:)
we arrived at the Kuantan Specialist Hospital around 1015 am ( after stopping by wan and aki's house to pick up some essentials) and checked in. The liquor kept on gushing out that the back of my cloth was quite significantly soaked. mama was initially placed in 4-beds- room. it was ok but not conducive enough. lack of privacy i guess. The nurses were nice. as i lay on the bed, the midwife nurse began to set up the CTG probe on my belly. well, my dear boy your CTG was reactive :)
Dr suraya came to check on you and mama around 1215 pm ( as she had an OT case to run earlier). She's a very lovely consultant specialist. She advised me to have Prostin inserted (a per vaginal medication to induce labour) as i still did not feel any contraction pain even after 6 hours plus post leaking liquor. i reluctantly agreed as i knew she was right but also had heard the less favourable story about prostin induction ( especially about its hyperstimulated pain ).
I was right too. mama began to have a moderate contraction straight away right after 5 minutes or so post prostin. my cervical opening was only 1 cm prior to the prostaglandin insertion. After 1 hour, the pain was becoming more and more frequent and stronger. i was no longer able to smile or laugh at papa's jokes. Dr Suraya came to my bed again. my os was on ly 2 cm at that time. she then prescribed me with intramuscular pethidine to ease the pain. the drug did make me sedated but failed to do its main job : pain relief. i suffered for another hour or so with contractions frequency of every 15 seconds!!
i could not take it much longer ( with os that small n pain like you are almost ready to push!) hence requested for epidural analgesia. they then pushed me to labour room for the procedure. i was lucky to be pain-free while on the wheelchair. however the ultimate pain came while i was about to underwent the procedure. i couldn't describe how excruciating it was. the midwife checked my os once again before the procedure. it was 3 cm but cervix was already effaced, she said. my epidural was administered by Dr Nordin, an anaesthesiologist. i was crying, citing 'Allah' ' lailahaillallah' and the syahadah. i didn't know what else to do. Papa was there all the while from the beginning, holding me, massaging, kissing my forehead and stuff. He too was worried and sad, seeing his wife in agony.. the pain was soo strong that i barely felt the epidural needle being poked at my back, luckily i did not move. Dr Nordin gave mama a bolus spinal analgesia as well for immediate pain relief ( as epidural's will take 5 to 10 minutes to work). My whole body felt numb for a while after the drug was introduced. i was almost immediately pain free after the procedure. Then Dr Suraya did a VE on me once again. i couldn't believe her when she said my cervix had already fully dilated! what?? 3cm to 10 in 10 minutes????? - Yes it was a super fast precipitated labour..
they then hurriedly prepared me for second stage labour and arranged my legs in lithotomy position. because of the newly introduced spinal analgesia, i barely felt like bearing down. however the midwife was monitoring my contraction hence helping me to know when to push. the second stage was very brief, with papa, dr suraya and the midwife encouraging me rather ..casually i'd say ( as i was no longer in severe pain :D ) . Being a doctor was a plus at that time i guess. though i didn't really have the bearing down feeling, but i technically know the correct way to 'push' and it did help!! Papa got to see your temporal head for a while( and he was really amazed it seemed) before your head crowned. I initially refused for episiotomy ( KSH still applies the 'rule' - epi for all primid) but after contemplating about my baby well being ( estimated weight of 2.8 Kg , no continuous ctg monitoring at that time, prostin induced + precipitated labour which were all prone to cause fetal distress) I finally agreed. Dr Suraya performed the episiotomy when your head was crowning. and in a matter of seconds, you were already on top of me my dear.. no longer inside.
I was speechless and mesmerized. hearing your first cry and saw you moving your limbs actively gave me a relief : i knew straight away my baby had a very good APGAR score ( indeed it was excellent. your APGAR was 9 at 1 minute and 10 at 10 minutes!) . they put a linen separating you from my belly which i slowly removed so that your skin would touch mine. it was so surreal. both papa and mama were in awe. we are finally.. parents - To a lovely baby boy.
The bonding time was very brief. they then brought you to an open care to put you under warmer ( as well as to have you cleaned). papa went to see you and had you 'azan-ed' while the doctor and nurses were nursing me. I can't help smiling, feeling fully tranquil. i have delivered our very own child...
After half an hour or so, the nurse returned you to us. you are soooo cute and adorable and tiny. you weighed 2.41 Kg, with length 43 sm and head circumference of 31 cm. your sugar level was 3.4 mMol/L according to the glucometre. Dr Siti was your attending consultant paediatrician. the first thing papa told me after he saw you was ' comel nye baby, mata die kelabu'. indeed you are very cute and your eyes are beautiful as well as the whole of you.
by 530 pm. we are transferred to a single room which was waaay better than the previous one. you were visited by many of our loved ones that night. wan and aki, nenek and tok, your great-uncles and great-aunties. everyone was in a very cheery mood just because of you :)
i think i have written long enough. there were still alot of things to tell you. but i will do so in future entries.
we named you, our petit ange : Harris - a protector, the guardian of heaven :)

and the baby is a.. ;-)
mama and abah visited Kuantan Specialist Hospital earlier today. and we have booked your obstetrician. God willing, it would be Dr suraya. We managed to see a glimpse of you again cheri;-) you re getting bigger now, slightly bigger than your age. you see, you re supposed to be 22 weeker now but your parametres mostly around 23 weeks. please don't make mommy drink the concentrated glucose honey:(
i look big too nowadays. I don't have oedema, but my body is widening i think.
we have also started shopping your essentials! currently you have owned about 5 to 6 apparels. mommy is still contemplating about your cot. i have always wanted a white cot with a laced net and a proper baby bedding. we did browse for them yesterday and they are quite expensive. but well, i have a feeling I m going to buy it anyhow. loving it!;-)
an oh, i should also mention. you are most likely ... a beautiful ( and one day, a handsome) baby boy :) :) :)

we have also started shopping your essentials! currently you have owned about 5 to 6 apparels. mommy is still contemplating about your cot. i have always wanted a white cot with a laced net and a proper baby bedding. we did browse for them yesterday and they are quite expensive. but well, i have a feeling I m going to buy it anyhow. loving it!;-)

booking and self scan
a mon petit bebe,
sorry mama hasn't blogged anything for a while. i have a couple of interesting events to share with you ;-)
sorry mama hasn't blogged anything for a while. i have a couple of interesting events to share with you ;-)
- mama has done the booking last month! i did at Klinik Kesihatan Temerloh. when i first approached the counter, everyone was treating me with disdain. but when they learned who i am during my registration, then only they started to treat me like a queen. yeah, quite a double standard but that's reality.my next TCA supposed to be on 18/02/2010 :)
- mama did a scan by myself! yes, i really longed to see you my best little thing on the early hours of February 3rd.I was oncall that night. so I did, with the help of one staff nurse ( Aunt munira). i saw your echo within the sac, sizing 3.6cm;) unfortunately, i was( and still am) not accustomed to that particular ultrasonography machine hence i couldn't measure the parameters and confirmed my estimated due date (EDD). i don't even know how to print the image from that machine:(

The first printed scan
helo my baby, i went for rescan today and there you are inside my uterus!;) well, not really you that was visualised in the screen, but your sac. you are still too small to be seen trans abdomen. i guess you re not a seven week old after all. you are probably younger. mama will scan again after 2 weeks.n hope to meet you and your beating heart by then! n hopefully we could determine your actual due date too:)
abah keep on urging me to eat healthy food for your sake.well, naturally he too is so concern about his little angel;)
i am yet to go for booking appointment.intended to go yesterday, however, can't because of transportation problem.i will do so when i have the pleasure and oppurtunity.
we love you, notre petit ange xoxo

CRAVINGS
Mama is currently on leave ( from work). Been on leave since thursday. But unfortuntely today is the last day :( mommy and daddy had a good time with my side of family. At sixth week, i begin to have cravings ( though abah didn't believe in such things :( ) Last night I really wanted to eat sushi. And earlier today I realy wanted to drink cold milo specifically from KFC. huhu. And so i did;)
* this post reminds me of Majorie, the fat fighter coach from Little Britain. she even has a special slot for Cravings . lols :D

the first scan
I went to O&G clinic just now. for confirmation scan. Dr Pratima was there. I politely asked her to do me that favor. however, she doubted she'd see anything as I'm supposed to be a 5-weeker. mama went with a full bladder( for a good bladder window during scan). Unfortunately, the scan still didn't show anything- yet. but what worrying me more is that my endometrium thickness is 9.2cm. it should be more.
God, let this be a valid intauterine pregnancy. mama will repeat scan in two weeks. let's pray you are for real my dear;X

Bienvenue!!!
Peace be upon everyone.
My dear little angel, assalamualaykum;X today, on the morning of January 5th 2010, Mama has finally convinced myself that you is indeed growing in my womb. mama quickly emailed abah this picture. He called me back once he saw the above picture. It is a pregnancy indicator. By calculating the day, you must have been about 5 intrauterine weeks old. Though i doubt it 'cause you should be younger than that. The traditional method (used until now), pregnancy age is calculated from the first day of my last menses. However, ovulation, as in the day I supposed to hatch my egg (which is half you!;0 ) from my ovary is about 14 days after that. so, me using my logic, i think you must be about 3 to 4 weeks old:). It's okay if you don't understand what I wrote now. you will later, because i know you'll be a brilliant child:) Abah is just as happy I can tell. He, like me, still processing the idea of having you in our life.we have always wanted you, and now you are real.. :)
